March in the Art Room

Well, I can't believe it's the beginning April already...that must mean it's time for me to do my March blog post. The weather is beginning to warm up and our projects have become Spring focused. Here's what we've been up to.

Kindergarten and first graders: Kindergarten and first graders are working on Pattern Farm Landscapes.
This project has been a challenging and has caused many students to complain of tired hands. For kinders it has been a challenge to create projects with so many steps. First drawing patterns and farm scenes with a pencil, then outlining with permanent marker, coloring in with crayon, and finally water color painting. We've come a long way from simpler projects at the beginning of the year. These colorful Spring projects are reminiscent of Grantwood landscapes. Yay Iowa!  Parents you probably noticed our puppies on the loose in the hallways during conferences, they were a great success!

Second and Third graders: Second graders have been studying reflections, tracing, color families and silhouettes. Students created a dinosaur landscape. First, students painted the top half of their paper with warm watercolors and the bottom half with cool colors. Next, they created an imaginary landscape with dinosaurs, volcanoes, lakes, and vegetation. They learned how to flip traced templates to create a reflection in the water. These dinosaur lands were very creative and really brought "the land before time" to life.

A few months ago, all second grade classes at Grimes and Black Hawk created quilt squares. These quilt squares were finally quilted together by their teacher and will be displayed at the upcoming art show in April.

Third graders are also working on the Farm Pattern Landscapes. They enjoyed the colorful payoff after all their hard work with making and tracing patterns. These are beautiful Springtime pieces.

Fourth and Fifth graders: Fourth graders at Black Hawk are still working on their birch trees and some have started sculpting, we have had many days where we have missed Art causing the projects to be extended for several weeks. Students at Grimes have completed their sculptures, which was a lengthy, but worthwhile project.
The sculptures are on display in the library at Black Hawk, and Grimes, and also in the glass display case at Grimes. As a side, note students at Grimes completed an Original Works project for Mother's Day. Students can order products with their work printed on it.

Community Partner: Midwest One Bank Student Art Show

On March 12th, 17 students from Black Hawk and Grimes were awarded with ribbons for their art work being chosen for the 2014 Midwest One Bank Calendar, these calendars are handed out to customers of the bank. The art work for the calendar was voted on by the mayor, a school board member, and other prominent community members. This year's theme was Burlington Landmarks. The event was a huge success. Many students from Corse, Black Hawk and Grimes participated and came to the artist reception. We were treated with delicious cookies and fresh popcorn. The best part was to see the pride on the student's faces, whether they won the contest or not! Everyone received a ribbon for participation and everyone was able to display their pride for their community.
